What is Cranial Osteopathy?

osteopathy

Osteopathy in the Cranial Field is a technique used to diagnose and treat body dysfunction. Dr William Garner Sutherland developed this gentle yet potent technique in 1898-1900 as a continuation of the osteopathic approach. He discovered that the human body has an inherent rhythm that guides health. The cranial rhythm is a very subtle movement that is associated with respiration and is present in all body tissues.

Cranial osteopaths are trained to find this rhythm and determine your health by monitoring the rate and amplitude of the rhythm. When we experience physical or emotional stress, the tissues in our body tighten causing disruptions to the cranial rhythm. Osteopaths feel these changes in rhythm which give them an insight into the condition of your body.

Once imbalance in cranial rhythm from body dysfunction is detected, osteopaths will rebalance body system by gently guiding the tissues and encouraging them to unwind and relax using a very gentle and light touch on either the cranium or the body. You remain fully clothed on the treatment table and no massage or forceful movements are applied. The experience is so relaxing that you may even fall asleep during the treatment.
